Austin Blues Family Tree Project

James Polk

"We have not exposed enough black kids to our heritage, to what we've done. Partially the reason being for that is integration. There's no way to get around it. Had we not had integration -- which has its good points and its bad points -- we would have had more focus in the black area. The black rhythm-and-blues bands would not have died the death that they died because there would still be more black clubs, there would still be more venues for black musicians to play in. And what happened, the music that the white kids of the young white bands are loving today is the music that T.D. Bell and Hubbard and those guys played in 1950. Black peoples already been through that. This is something totally new to them because they've finally learned how to play it."
