We’re back with more recommendations for how to navigate the circus of SXSW. Our advice:Step 1 – Wolf down some hungover chilaquiles.
Step 2 – Mylanta.
Step 3 – Go to the following events:
Listen Global, Act Local Showcase
Now in its third year, this showcase is one of the weekend’s heavy hitters. First, there’s the lineup, which is packed with great acts. To name just a few: A Tribe Called Red, Los Rakas (who have a major label debut coming in April), Zuzuka Poderosa, Sonora, Irene Diaz, The GTW, Buscabulla (if you missed her at Fader Fort yesterday), World Hood, and Atropolis (of Dutty Artz). But the event, put together by Sol Collective’s Estrella Hood & Conrazón’s Nati Linares, is about more than just the music. It’s about connecting the music with activism, grounding it in the local community, and keeping the spirit that originally characterized SXSW alive. In addition to the music, the showcase will also include an art exhibit, local artisan vendors, BBQ (and a vegan options too!) – so you’re probably going to want to set up shop here for a while.
When: 2:00PM – 12:00AM
Where: Kenny Dorham’s Backyard, 1104 East 11th Street
What You Need to Get In: Nothing! Just show up.
SXAmericas Showcases (8:00pm – 2:00am)
This year marks the debut of South by Américas (SXAmericas), a series of events to showcase Latino talent in music, tech & film. The music events include a mix of familiar names and, refreshingly, some people we’ve never heard of (and hearing new stuff is why you’re really at SXSW right?)Sounds from Spain – Lori Meyers / Fuel Fandango / Betunizer Lucille
Sounds of Ibero-America – Mariachi Las Alteñas Russian House
Club Los Globos LA – Kumbia Queers / El Conjunto La Nueva Ola / La Pulpafonic Flamingo Cantina
Warp Magazine – Gang of Youths / Blondfire / ASTR / 424Blackheart
ACHE Volument Cero – No Somos Marineros / V V Brown / División Minúscula / Ana Tijoux Buffalo Billiards
Hometown heroes Peligrosa are showing all the out of towners how Austin does it with a 5 day, 50+DJ extravaganza. Watch the video recap of Day 1 below if you need any convincing that this is the spot where everyone should be ending their night- although tbh hosting your party at a venue called “Chupacabra” was all the convincing I needed. Tonight’s edition has the Moombahton Massive crew in full force: Nadastrom, Sabo B2B Jen Lasher, Wiley Jay, Buku, Pickster One, Brent Tactic B2B Orion + special guests.
When: 10:00PM – 2:00AM
Where: Chupacabra Cantina (400 E. 6th St.)
What You Need to Get In: Nothing but your ID and a smile.
If you missed yesterday’s recommendations and you feel like getting FOMO about what you missed, you can check them out here. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s guide!
