Join us again on July 22nd for the East End’s monthly celebration of culture and community! For the seventh consecutive season, DiverseArts Culture Works hosts East End Fourth Fridays!: a fun, family-friendly celebration of art, music and community in East Austin.

Headlining this month’s lineup is Huerta Culture, an Austin-based music collective that mixes various styles to create a fusion of traditional Latino rhythms, ranging from Cuban son and salsa to reggae, ska and Columbian cumbia. The result is a unique musical style that band member MC Chac Chacvarria calls “psichocumbia reggaeska.” The group evolved from the jam sessions its members and their friends held in their Huerta Street residence in South Austin, and are now proud to bring the party to Kenny Dorham’s Backyard in the heart of East Austin’s Cultural Heritage district! To learn more about Huerta Culture, visit them at http://www.facebook.com/huertaculture.

Music begins at 8 pm with the return of Debo Adejobi’s Traditional African Drum Crew, a crowd favorite whose rhythms captivate both audience and passersby alike. Following them is Ugly Elephant, a dynamic Funk-Jazz-Fusion band straight out of Austin. They combine funk grooves with progressive rock create a sound that the band calls “impromptu yet structured, with no musical boundaries.” Ugly Elephant cites a wide spectrum of musical influences, ranging from Prince to Tool to Bootsy Collins. Bring your dancing shoes, because this band guarantees that their music “will keep you off your feet, hitting you deep in the chest with some nasty funk that will force your body to move to the beat.” For more information, visit their official website at http://www.uglyelephantband.com.

In addition to this high-energy lineup, we offer free Live Oak beer for adults and free East Side Pies pizzas for the kids (while supplies last)! From 7 to 8 pm, there are free, hands-on children’s art activities, with a $5 cover for adults who stick around for the music. Our vending partner, Sun Kitchens Co-op, also has tasty organic vegan and non-vegan treats available for purchase.

Bring your lawn chairs, picnic blankets, family, and friends to Kenny Dorham’s Backyard for an evening of food, art, and multicultural music under the stars as we celebrate East Austin’s vibrant community!
