In my 16 years in Austin, I have spent a lot of time with my eyes on the ground. As an architectural historian, I travel all over Texas, collecting what most would never even see, much less pick up. But I find amazing beauty in the intentionally discarded and the inadvertently abandoned, the crumpled and cracked, and the wrong sides of things. Time creates an unmatched patina. I work with the new stuff, too, but only in conjunction with the old bits and pieces. My careful and intimate arrangements invite the viewers to appreciate what they may not have had the opportunity, or taken the time, to notice.
