East 11th Street Beats: Independent Music Showcase celebrates the spirit of summer with performances from independent Texas jazz, hip-hop, rock, and turntable acts.  This event invites everyone in the contemporary Austin community to head East for some new music under a starry night sky.  Guests are encouraged to explore the neighborhood, check out new businesses, and enjoy the vibrant nightlife in the area.  Music will play all night with a lineup including J. King, DJ Protégé, Pagoda, Above All Entertainment, and the word/jazz lowstars.

J. King is a 21-year-old hip-hop and R&B artist. He cites Genuwine and East Coast rap styles as some of his major influences, and both surface in his unique, sensual music. He is an extraordinary break-dancer and incorporates dancing into his vocal performances. The subject matter of his music  primarily deals with relationships and the hard-knocks of life. Originally from Queens, New York, J. King currently lives in New Braunfels, TX with his son, Malikigh Jonathan Miranda.

DJ Protégé is a part of the Blue Room Music Group. He is a frequent special guest at venues all around Austin and knows how to mix the right music to create a perfect party atmosphere. He has been spinning for 12 years and says DJ Magic Mike inspired him to become a DJ. His mixes include Hip Hop, Reggae, House, and 80’s music. DJ Protégé keeps energy levels high, the crowd happy, and the music pumping.

Pagoda is a rock band with a biting alternative edge. Their music features driving guitar riffs, melodic vocal hooks, and sucker-punch arrangements. They draw inspiration for their music from bands such as Metallica, Slayer, Mastadon, and Slipknot. All of the members of Pagoda are from Texas.

Above All Entertainment is a group of young, local rappers, DJs, and MCs who claim influences such as Jay Z, Joe Budden, and 50 Cent.  Founder and CEO, Clinton "Checkmate" Davis Jr. leads the group with a mission to "deliver exceptionally powerful music and dominate the industry."  Two members, Checkmate and G.C.B. perform this Friday.

The word/jazz lowstars perform impromptu jazz music and collaborative spoken word pieces. They are one of the most enduring spoken word and music projects in Austin. The lowstars have established themselves as masters of spontaneity who never hesitate to find inspiration at a moment’s notice.
